DEFINITIONS
Intelligent hauntings are those in which the ghost interacts with the present. It is intelligent, in that it may communicate with those on the earthly plane. The disembodied person has elected for some reason to stay or maybe just visit the physical world, due to a connection with a person, place or thing. Intelligent hauntings may also occur due to a spirit's compelling need to deliver a message from the other side of the grave, or to watch over loved ones. In addition, it is also plausible that intelligent hauntings occur due to attachments the ghostly person feels through memories, trauma, tragedy or any other emotional tie.
Residual hauntings are a playback of a past event. The apparitions involved are not spirits, they are "recordings" of the event that play over and over again.
Poltergeist hauntings are a ghost or other supernatural being supposedly responsible for physical disturbances such as loud noises and objects thrown around.
Portal hauntings, or paranormal phenomena, is the most controversial type of haunting that has been documented to date by paranormal researchers. The idea that this type of activity may actually exist is still mostly theory and conjecture... although evidence is starting to be collected which may actually prove these "portals" exist. The problem is that this type of haunting is the least understood and least traditional of all types of spirit activity. Many ghost researchers reject the theories behind "portals" because they do not fit into their accepted ideas of haunted places.... but we cannot afford to do this. We cannot afford to just reject off-hand something that we simply do not understand. Just think, if we had done this, many researchers would still be thinking that "poltergeist" activity was the work of evil spirits.... and not activity caused by the hidden depths of the human mind. So, strange and untraditional or not, the idea of the "portal" must be examined because evidence is starting to appear which just may surprise the doubters among you.
Animal hauntings are starting to be recognized as a traditional haunting.
Demonic hauntings are by a nonhuman entity. Can be very dramatic, even violent. Demonic hauntings often start out with subtle and relatively simple paranormal activity, then quickly increase to stronger activity. Most often effects people or families that are already under great personal stress from conditions such as alcohol or drug use, psychological or emotional problems, family or marital problems, etc. It is believed the nonhuman entity takes advantage of people in weakened psychological and emotional condition. Persons who believe they and/or their families are the subject of a demonic haunting should immediately seek both professional paranormal assistance and counseling help.
